It seems Mayor Menino has been courting the clean tech and life sciences interests. Last month, the Boston Business Journal‘s Galen Moore reported that small high tech businesses are moving into many of the brick-and-beam spaces common in this area.  BBJ reports that at least seven ‘tech’ firms have moved into this district within the past 6 months.  “They range in size from single-digit personnel to head counts in the low hundreds, lured by rents that start at about $20 per square foot per year.”

     Mayor Menino, on the Innovation District Website posts: ““A new approach is called for on the waterfront – one that is both more deliberate and more experimental… The massive expanse of the South Boston waterfront, with its existing knowledge base, opportunity for growth, and world-class infrastructure is ripe to produce world-class products and services.”

   A January report by the Boston Globe announced that Heartland Robotics Inc. would be relocating its corporate HQ and development center to our new “Innovation District”, moving its 30 employees to Wormwood Street.  A company press release quotes company president and chief executive Scott Eckert,  “In order to attract the world-class talent that we need, we wanted a terrific office space, in a vibrant part of the city, and easily accessible by public transportation,”

    We expect that as the New England weather softens, we will be experiencing even more arts, innovation and great food in Boston’s Innovation District.
